Japan's Self-Defense Forces and the U.S. Military Conducted F-15, E-767 and F-22 Tactical Training over the East China Sea on October 14

Japan·United States
Japan's Joint Staff announced on October 15, 2026, that the Self-Defense Forces and the United States military had conducted Japan-United States bilateral training on October 14 over the East China Sea northwest of Okinawa Island. The participating aircraft were two F-15 fighters of the 9th Air Wing and one E-767 airborne early warning and control aircraft of the Airborne Warning and Control Wing of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, and four United States F-22 fighters. The Joint Staff listed the training item as various tactical training. The date, location, aircraft types, and numbers all follow the Joint Staff announcement.
The Joint Staff said the training was conducted as the security environment surrounding Japan grows increasingly severe. It said the training confirmed the strong will of Japan and the United States not to allow unilateral changes to the status quo by force, and the readiness posture of the Self-Defense Forces and the United States military, and further strengthened the deterrence and response capabilities of the Japan-United States alliance. That passage is the Joint Staff's assessment. No United States statement describing the same training in its own wording was quoted in the Japanese announcement.
This announcement concerns a single bilateral training event. Keen Sword 27, announced by the Joint Staff on September 29, 2026, is a separate Japan-United States joint integrated exercise scheduled from October 19 to 29. Its dates and document differ from this October 14 training.
